How Important is a Blade Cover (more commonly called Soakers)?

Blade covers/soakers are the soft protectors which can be purchased or easily be home-made and used to protect the blade while in your skate bag.  The covers not only protect the blade but also the bag in which your skates are being carried.  In addition the soakers will help remove any moisture remaining after drying the blade at the end of a skating session.
